Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that live in the gut. Our bodies are like ecosystem with cells, microbes, and even bacteria. Some bacteria can be detrimental to health depending on the strain while others can provide health benefits. If you’ve ever taken an antibiotic, there is a good chance you wiped out all of the healthy bacteria leaving an unhealthy gut flora. To restore balance of bacteria, eating fermented foods or taking probiotics on a regular basis is recommended. Fermented food can also treat candida which is a cause of many health problems and bad breath. The fermentation process is what creates these helpful bacteria so there are many different kinds of foods that can contribute to a better gut flora. Probiotics have the ability to modulate the immune system allowing for less frequent colds and infections. They can also maintain healthy bowel movements and regulates bile creation and gastric secretion. Probiotics are also often the first line of defense, monitoring what comes into the body.
