Although they can be extremely beneficial to your health, it is also wise to know not all mushrooms are safe. Be extra careful if you are foraging for them and make sure you know which ones are toxic and which ones are not. There are hundreds of variations of mushrooms with different attributes but here are some common health benefits of consuming mushrooms.

Fighting cancer

is an amazing health benefit of mushrooms. “Natural killer cells” are unique in the sense that they can actually seek and destroy cancer cells. It is important to increase the amount of these cells in the body to give them a better chance at overcoming cancer. Mushrooms have been shown to do just that.  Mushrooms can inhibit tumor formation, protect DNA from damage and stop cell mutation. They also aid in detoxification, essentially allowing waste to be removed from the body quicker. This waste is filled with cancer causing chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis.

A healthy heart

can be obtained by including mushrooms into your diet. They are packed with phytonutrients that help keep cells from sticking to the walls of blood vessels. They have sterol compounds that interfere with the production of cholesterol in the liver. However they raise levels of HDL, which is the good cholesterol and lowers levels of dangerous LDL cholesterol.

Mushrooms can help with weight management.

Mushrooms are a low-calorie and nutrient-dense food. Eating mushrooms several times per week is linked with a healthy body weight and overall better fitness. This effect is especially apparent when meat is replaced with mushrooms in a diet.

Improve your brain function with mushrooms.

Mushrooms contain b vitamins which aid mental health. A lack of certain B vitamins has been linked with depression and other mood problems. Certain type of mushrooms can be identified as adaptogens, meaning they help the body fight off excess cortisol levels. Cortisol is a stress hormone and when there is a chronic abundance it can destroy your health fast.
