Maca root is an uncommon superfood but can be found in supplement form in many health food stores. It is an adaptogen and a member of the cruciferous family, like broccoli and cauliflower. Maca root grown high in the mountains of South America, mainly in Peru. Although it isn’t very popular, Maca has been used for its healing properties for thousands of years in the regions of the Andes Mountains. It is extremely nutrient dense and works to limit stress in the body. Many ancient cultures also believed that it worked as a great aphrodisiac. Maca is also a great source of phytonutrients, making it a powerful disease fighter and longevity promoter.

Although more research is needed on its effects on hormonal levels, maca root has a huge potential to be a natural testosterone booster in men.

A 2008 study from the journal Menopause showed that maca benefits had positive results on boosting menopausal women’s moods and decreasing levels of anxiety and depression.
