Health Benefits of Cocao | Recipes | References |

Raw cocao is the purest unprocessed version of chocolate. Although it has a bitter taste, it can easily be added to salads and smoothies. It makes for a delicious treat when paired with sweet fruit. Cocao beans were used for their medicinal and aphrodisiacal properties and they were traded just like currency among ancient South American civilizations. The benefits were so strong that the Spanish even called them “black gold”.

Improving your mood

is something cocao can do. Serotonin, dopamine, anandamide and phenylethylamine are all neurotransmitters that regulate mood. Cocao has been proven to boost these transmitters in the brain allowing for a happier life.

Preventing premature aging

is an interesting benefit of cocao. Antioxidants fight off aging by reversing free radical damage. Cocao contains more anti-oxidants then blueberries and green tea. Nutrient density is important to get the most out of your meals so adding even a bit of cocao will help you reach your daily antioxidant intakes.

Preventing anemia

is another health benefit of consuming cocoa. Red blood cells require iron to be produced. Fatigue is a common symptom of anemia and you can’t feel optimized when you’re tired. Allow your body to function better by providing it with iron filled cocao. Pair it with vitamin C rich foods to create a food synergy and allow for better absorption.

Improve muscle and nerve function

with regular consumption of cocao. Magnesium is required for more than 300 bodily processes including nerve and muscle function.  Epicatechin in cocoa also helps maintain proper muscle and nerve function. With the combined density of magnesium and epicatechin, Cocao is a great way to support healthy bodily reactions.

Treating diarrhea

is something cocao can do. Diarrhea is very uncomfortable and cocao can be a natural remedy for this. Flavonoid compounds present in cacao, or molecularly closely related compounds, were tested by the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, resulting in the possible prevention of the buildup of fluid in the small intestine that’s associated with diarrhea.

Weight loss

is another effect of cocao. This is because it has a high fiber content allowing for better digestion and allows for your body to get rid of waste. The fiber also makes you feel full, curbing your foods cravings. Make sure you buy raw cacoa without sugar because sugar can attribute to weight gain. Instead of cutting out chocolate replace it with the healthier version of it.
